SCOPE OF WORK

The new learning facilities at Hampton Court Palace were opened by Prince Charles during his visit to the palace. The new build Clore Centre and refurbished first floor of the Barrack Block has expanded the teaching capacity of the palace by 50%, allowing it to cater to over 100,000 students annually.

The works, on a Scheduled Ancient Monument, had to be carried out in accordance with strict regulations to comply with the requirements of English Heritage. During enabling works a Tudor wall not previously recorded was discovered. Under the direction of Historic Royal Palaces and Chorus’ supervision, an archaeologist hand dug the area to expose the full extent of the Tudor wall before it was reburied for posterity. Amongst the items discovered were coins, clay pipes, spoons, old cess pits and even preserved Georgian dung.

The Clore Centre is a single storey extension the existing buildings. The design merges a modern sliding window wall with traditional elements such as the roof built to match the existing buildings and ventilation stacks, which mirror Tudor chimneys on the rest of the site.
